SUMMARY:FAMILY BAT WALK
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a nature night-time adventure to discover what bats can be found on Woodoaks Farm.\nUnder the guidance of Christina Bessant\, you will learn how to use a bat detector to scan the skies and identify the bat species you are able to listen to. \nChristina is an ecologist with superb knowledge of the wildlife that occurs in the UK. As a committee member of Ruislip and District Natural History Society and Deputy Chair of the Maple Lodge Conservation Society\, Christina helps both teams to regularly survey their local bat population. \nAlongside our volunteer entomologist John Mynett\, we will also get a chance to see what moths might be flying that night – a rich food source for the bats. \nWhen: Friday 28th August – please note this will move to Saturday 29th Augustl if wet weather\, so you must be available for BOTH dates. \nTime: 8.00-9.00pm \nFind us: Woodoaks Farm\, Denham Way\, Maple Cross\, Herts. WD3 9XQ (Junction 17 of M25 – entrance opposite the grey hoarding boards). \nCost: Children £4.00 / Adults £6.00 – plus additional booking fee. \nBring: A torch & bat detector if you have one. We will be providing shared bat detectors for those that need them. \nWear: Walk includes some hills and uneven ground so appropriate footwear is recommended. \nAccess: If you would like to join us but need some assistance please call us on 07754 035614. We will do our best to help you and can arrange volunteer assistance. \nAll Terrain Tramper: We have one ticket available of our all terrain tramper which will allow anyone with limited mobility to join us. Please note when booking this you will need to arrive at 7.30 for detailed instructions prior to use. \nWet Weather Cancellation Details – in the eventuality of rain we will have to postpone the walk and will inform you of this decision on the morning of Friday 24th and Saturday 25th via email. \nChildren: Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult. \nDogs: We are keen to not disturb the wildlife as we walk\, so we would ask that you do not bring your dog on this occasion. \nBooking: Places for the Bat Walk are limited so booking is necessary.

DESCRIPTION:If are drawn to handmade crafts using traditional techniques\, or the satisfaction of working with your hands – this one’s for you!  \nWoodoaks Farm are offering two very special\, one day courses in wood turning and carving with the brilliant Ali Asadi taking place on Saturday and Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September. \nAli will help participants to transform a single harvested trunk into bowls that showcase the traditional heritage skill of pole-lathe turning with green wood. \nDuring the one day course\, you will learn how to design and shape a bowl\, how to create a bowl blank and how to turn it into a finished product\, while turning greenwood on a pole lathe and using traditional hand tools. \nThe bowl you make will be suitable for hot food. \nCourse begins with splitting the log and axing out a blank for your bowl. Then you will start turning\, using the foot-powered pole lathe with hand-forged hook tools. At the end of the day\, you will use a hook knife to carve and smooth out the final step. \n💚 Cost: £130 – includes lunch\, all training\, tools\, wood & end product.\n📅 Dates: Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September\n⏰ 10-5pm – lunch included.\n📍 Location: The Black Barn\, Cart Sheds. Denham Way\, Maple Cross. Herts WD3 9XQ. \nLunch plus teas and coffees throughout the day will be provided. \nThe Tea Shack café and onsite craft brewery Creative Juices Brewing Company are also available plus free toilets and parking. \nTickets are limited to 6 people per workshop so book early to avoid disappointment.  \nAbout Ali \nAli Asadi carved his first spoon in 2015 and fell in love with both the process and the techniques of green woodworking. Following lots of self practice\, attending community carving events and learning opportunities\, Ali was lucky enough to spend some time with pole lathe bowl turners Sharif Adams and Adrian Llyod\, both well respected amongst the craft community. \nEver since Ali has been turning and carving non stop. Hundreds of bowls\, end grain cups as well as more specialist items including locking lidded boxes\, nested bowls as well as Alis beautiful plates. \nOver the last 5 years\, Ali has been forging his own turning tools\, teaching courses in all things greenwood as well as undertaking demonstrations to communicate the craft to the public at events nationwide and at his own workshop in Stevenage.
