Come and join us for our Adults only BUTTERFLY WALK & COUNT on Saturday 18th July 🦋.
Suitable for ages 16+
(NB; wet weather backstop day of August 01st. If booking please make sure you can make both dates).
Martin Taylor, butterfly enthusiast and Woodoaks volunteer , will lead us in a two hour walk, when we hope to see regular garden species such as Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and Red Admiral, but also search for grassland loving species such as Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Gatekeeper and the Skippers.
If we are lucky, we may see the beautiful Marbled White and perhaps the Small Heath.
Volunteer Suzanne Smith will be helping Martin to point out some of the plants which are vital to the survival of butterfly species in their caterpillar stage and explaining how The Soil Association Land Trust are positively working to create improved butterfly habitats at Woodoaks Farm.
Our expert endomologist and Woodoaks Volunteer John Mynett will help is to get up close with the night time flying moths that can be found on the farm. With the help of a moth trap set out the night before the walk (and with the right weather) we will be able to witness these elusive and beautiful creatures that also play an important part in our ecosystem.
As part of our walk we’ll be taking positive action to check in on the state of our wildlife by taking part in The BIG BUTTERFLY COUNTÂ which is a UK-wide survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment simply by counting the amount and type of butterflies and day flying moths we see.
You don’t need any special equipment to take part, just make sure you come with open eyes, a curious mind.
The track is a little uneven, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Please wear layers to add or peel off and don’t forget your water bottles!
You may like to download your own butterfly chart or go PAPER FREE by downloading the free BIG BUTTERFLY COUNT app in advance of the walk here https://bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org/
