Christchurch Primary School Chorleywood joined us on the farm to create 29 bird boxes. Busy children, volunteers and teachers put together 174 pieces of reclaimed wood, lovingly cut & prepped by education volunteer Eco Ted.
This was all part of the Year 5’s Design and Technology teaching being led by teacher Ms Roberts. A chance to get familiar with drills, screws & construction whilst also learning about the importance of helping to protect wildlife and reverse the decline in nature.
To welcome children and bright minds onto the farm is a privilege we never take for granted. To stand in the Black Barn get the children to guess how old it is, to point out circling Kites and kestrels above the fields. To lift fresh Little Owl pellets from the floor and explain what they are to wide eyed children. It’s all a natural joy.
We wondered why so many within the class had chosen to create the box option for a Robin but then we found out that they’d been reading Michael Morpurgo‘s ‘Coming Home’. The Story of a Robin’s epic Christmas journey which may have inspired their choice?
A massive thank you to our volunteers Suzanne, Gary, Jonathan, Claire & Ted for assisting in this creative challenge. Your warmth energy and application in all you do is HUGELY valued.
