Last Saturday Rickey’s Alkaline Market Garden gates were opened to welcome families from London to a Family Farm Day run in conjunction with The Community Ministry of Health.
With the farm in full sunshine the atmosphere was joyous!
Whether planting seeds, talking to Julian the beekeeper, or simply jumping off woodchip piles, the children were all busy having fun – and the adults were able to visit the farm shop and walk The Alkaline Market Garden with Rickey himself, finding out about organic growing methods and what it really means to look after your soil.
One lady thanked Rickey for the insight he had given her into alternative farming techniques. Her son was studying farm management and was looking for a different approach. She had found the farm tour inspiring. Another couple said they wanted to spend the day showing their children where their food comes from.
Beekeeper Julian said “As a biology teacher I know that many young people have no idea how food reaches their table. That’s a concern. If we hope that the next generation will look after the environment but they’ve no connection to it, why would they wish to protect it?” …isn’t this the fundamental question?
All-in-all, what a fabulous day! Thank you to Rickey, Francesca and all the team at The Community Ministry of Health for creating such a special event. Watch this space for more news on other upcoming farm days at Woodoaks with Rickey!
Don’t forget! Rickeys farm shop is open every Sunday 10-4pm.
