Community Volunteers Rise up to Tree Plant at Woodoaks farm

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Chinese Proverb
Last week we kicked off the creation of our New Woodland Shelter Belt at Woodoaks.
Two days of all hands on deck as 60 community volunteers planted 500 trees with stakes, guards and woodchip in place. Those trees are good to grow!

Huge thanks to the The Woodland Trust who worked with us to make this happen, sourcing trees and advising us on design, planting and maintenance.

Made up of mixed woodland comprising of shrub and tree species, the trees will provide shelter alongside the road for cattle and sheep. It will also connect the new woodland to existing trees and hedges providing a corridor for wildlife to move deeper into the farm.
The added benefits of the woodland include carbon sequestration and the yield of natural product in the long term for use around the farm (woodchip, hazel/willow stakes etc.)

On Wednesday 26th February we’ll be completing our planting when we’ll be welcoming a whole new host of volunteers including students from Croxley Danes.
